The Bette Davis quote shown at the beginning of the film is misquoted
Synopsis
In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks Hollywood’s young starlets, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past. The Hollywood star Maxine stumps her cigarette on is that of Theda Bara, the actress Pearl was inspired by to name her alligator in Pearl (2022). It’s actually “Until you’re known as a monster in my profession, you’re not a star.” Maxine Minx: Do you know what happened to the last person who tried to kill me?
Edited from X (2022)
I crushed his fucking head in. In keeping with the film’s 80s aesthetic, after the credits, a rewind of “Be Kind” appears. A sticker is shown, like on many video store rentals. Give Me All Your Loving Written by Frank Beard (as Frank Lee Beard), Billy Gibbons & Dusty Hill (as Joe Michael Hill) Performed by ZZ Top Courtesy of Warner Records By arrangement with Warner Music Group Film & Television Licensing I just got back from an early screening and wanted to share some thoughts.
It’ll be fine
Overall it was a good time. Some of the tone was more like drama than horror as there aren’t any really tense or scary moments, but I understand horror isn’t always played that way. If you haven’t seen Pearl, you already know that. I feel like you’d need to at least see X beforehand to understand some of the backstory and references.
Mia Goth is always worth watching
I really liked the style of the film, that sleazy, glamorous 80s look was spot on. Ti West is good at that as seen in his previous work, especially House of the Devil. X remains my favorite of the trilogy, but if you’re a fan of the other two films you’ll enjoy it. The soundtrack, costumes, and performances were all done very well.
